Community Week 2013: Material Equilibrium
State of the Community
Foreword
Sonia Dillon-Marty
The Dhillon Marty Foundation produced Material Equilibrium to connect artists and architects with regions and topics that are fertile ground for advancing design in the service of long-term social and environmental sustainability. Before the event, participants were invited to submit their ideas, research or observations for publication in the form of essays, drawings or photographs. They were also invited to present their work at the symposium on the final day of the weeklong event.
The questions posed to participants before their arrival and intended to inform their submissions were:
- What is at the intersection of the physical environments, time and the elements?
- In material, ecology and the design of the built environment, when is destruction as much a beginning as an end?
These submissions from 14 countries represent the critical and creative thinking of the participants of the inaugural Community Week.
